Four Ways to Battle Exhaustion on the Road

Did you know that driving while sleep deprived is more dangerous than driving after drinking, and that drinking coffee to combat fatigue behind the wheel can make the situation worse? This is serious for all drivers, but especially for long-haul truckers who are under pressure to arrive at their destination within a tight time limit. Keep reading to learn how to recognize the signs of fatigue and how to combat exhaustion on the road.
Signs of Fatigue
The signs of fatigue include more than yawning and heavy eyelids. Behind the wheel fatigue can cause you to:
- drive too fast or too slowly.
- lose your concentration and/or have memory lapses.
- drift out of your lane.
- miss turns or exits.
- fail to check mirrors.
- have trouble keeping your eyes focused.
- feel irritable and aggressive.
- have slower response time.
Four Ways to Combat Fatigue & Exhaustion
Sleep
The first thing you can do to battle exhaustion on the road is to prioritize getting adequate sleep. This means:
- starting each trip well rested and with at least 7 hours of sleep under your belt.
- planning your route and schedule so that you can get nightly/regular sleep – the Canadian Automobile Association recommends not driving at times you would normally be sleeping.
- always get more than 5 hours of sleep every 24-hour period to avoid impairment.
Hydration
Another strategy to help battle exhaustion on the road is to stay hydrated and eat small nutritious meals. Not only do these practices allow for regular breaks (see below), but they also keep you healthy and more alert. While dehydration can result in muscles cramps, dizziness, feelings of fatigue, and sluggishness, proper hydration:
- allows your heart to pump your blood efficiently.
- supports brain function and mental clarity.
- regulates your body temperature.
- aids in the elimination of toxins from your body.
- can contribute to an improved quality of sleep.
Nutrition
Similarly, small, healthy meals help you maintain stable blood sugar, and therefore energy levels. Small meals help prevent post-meal drowsiness and can help enhance your cognitive function. Other benefits of this type of eating include an improvement in nutritional intake and a more regulated metabolism. It may also help prevent overeating and improve overall health.
Breaks
Taking regular breaks and staying active during those breaks can also help you battle exhaustion on the road by allowing your mind to rest, and your body to move. Moving helps avoid discomfort from sitting too long and activates your circulation.
Breaks often lead to getting some fresh air, having a snack or a hydrating drink, and even interacting with nature or people, all of which help stimulate your mind and your senses. In cases of significant drowsiness, your break can also allow you the opportunity for rejuvenation through a nap.
